Foreshadowing

Which foreshadows did you find throughout the novella? Why were they foreshadows or how did they develop throughout the book.

  1. When George told Lennie if he ever gets in trouble to hide in the bush. This is a foreshadow because its showing us that Lennie was eventually going to get into some trouble.

    1. It kind of makes me wonder if there are foreshadows in my life.. I mean, how many times have we felt that we should've listened to something or had a feeling.. Is this fate or coincidence?

    2. Fate. Not saying Lennie deserved all the problems he had to deal with, but this was inescapable Lennie would have had his troubles following him and George forever. Lennie just never really understood how to handle situations or how to handle everyday living.

  2. When Lennie was touching Curly's Wifes "soft hair". This was foreshadowing that something bad would happen, because every time Lennie touches "soft" things, they end up dead.

    2. Wow. You are certainly a man of many words. What characteristics about each make them so relative or similar?

    3. You are certainly a woman of many thoughts. What was quoted in my post?

  3. Yeah, how he touched the girl's red dress in the beginning and did'nt let go, it was foreshadowing to what was going to happen when he touched Curley's hair.

  4. Your idea is intelligent but your writing insults your intelligence.

In order to prove actual foreshadowing, there are typically similarities between the two scenes. So how is the incident with the woman's dress and Curley's wife similar?

  5. There were many instances of foreshadowing in this novel. One of the most obvious instances is when Lennie pulled Curley's wife's hair. When Lennie has been touching the red dress and he was told to let go, he kept pulling. When he started to play with her hair I already knew something bad was going to happen because of the past.

    1. I agree, as soon as she started to yell about Lennie messing up her hair I knew he was going to freak out and hurt her. However I did not expect him to kill her, I thought that Curly would walk in and hurt Lennie for touching her because of George's warnings to Lennie about Curly.

    2. @both of you!
So the foreshadow was the red dress incident, not the touching of Curley's wife's hair.

  6. There are many things that happen in this novel that foreshadows future events. The most obvious events that foreshadow the future are when Lennie says that he doesn't like the ranch, when George tells Lennie to hide in the bush if anything happened, and when Lennie was touching Curly's wife's hair. When Lennie tells George he doesn't like the ranch that foreshadows that something bad is going to happen to Lennie to not like the ranch. When George repeatedly tells Lennie to hide in the brush if anything bad happens foreshadows that Lennie is definitely going to do something bad. Also when Lennie was touching Curly's wife's hair she scared him and he grabbed her hair. This shows that he is going to harm or scare her because of what happened in Weed

  7. All foreshadows you mentioned were definitely direct ties to future events, but the touching of the hair wasn't as obvious. Each foreshadow needs to have a similarity or connection to the event that later occurs.
